The Nashville ATHENA Award Program Announces $29,500 in Scholarships For 2014

(NASHVILLE, TN – October 3, 2013) The Nashville ATHENA Award Program will bestow a total of eight scholarships during the ATHENA award ceremony on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the War Memorial in Nashville, Tennessee. The 2014 scholarships will total $29,500.

The scholarships honoring the achievements of women in the greater Nashville metropolitan area are divided into both traditional and non-traditional categories. Four Traditional Scholarships will be granted to female students who are graduating from public or private high schools located in Davidson or its contiguous counties. In addition, there will be four Non-Traditional Scholarships presented in the following categories:

  • Two “Return to the Workforce Scholarships” will be awarded to women who are pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree later in life.
  • One “Supporting Technology Scholarship” will be presented to a woman who is currently in the workforce but who has chosen to pursue a degree in science, technology, engineering, or research.
  • One “Supporting Healthcare Scholarship” will be awarded to a woman currently in the workforce but who has chosen to pursue a degree in a healthcare-related field.

The scholarship sponsors are: the ATHENA Alumni Society, First Tennessee Bank, UPS, Emdeon, Women in Technology of Tennessee (WiTT), Saint Thomas Health Services, State Farm Insurance, and Caregivers by WholeCare.

Among other requirements, each applicant must complete a 300-word essay describing how they have embodied Athena’s characteristics of wisdom, strength, and justice in their own life and endeavors. The essay question for 2014 is:    Why is it important and necessary to focus on contributions made by women in our society?

Applications, essays, and all required information must be uploaded and submitted online by December 6, 2013.
