Member Profile Spotlight: Leighanne White

Leighanne White joined Cable in April 2017 and is relatively new to the organization. She decided to join Cable because it provided her with the opportunity to meet and learn from successful women in the area. It has been four years since Leighanne moved to Nashville from Pennsylvania, and Cable has allowed her to expand both her professional and social networks and connect with a diverse group of female leaders.

We asked Leighanne a variety of questions about her professional background, one of which was what she considers to be the most single defining moment of her career.

“Having the courage to leave my laboratory-based job and begin an office job when my education and past professional job experience had all been in a lab setting. Though it was difficult and a bit scary, it was the best decision I could have made because it allowed me to grow professionally, develop new skills and discover strengths I did not know I had. I also learned that I am not defined by my college degree or past job experience and that, with hard work and determination, I can achieve anything I set my mind to.”

Leighanne also credited a lot of her success and inspiration to her role model. “My mother-in-law is a professional role model for me and also a mentor in all aspects of my life. She is hardworking, never tiring and extremely ambitious. She is a great listener and an admirable leader. I consider myself very lucky to be able to learn from her experiences as a business owner, CEO, mother, wife, sister and friend.”

Leighanne White is an implementation specialist at HealthStream. She works with a collaborative team to set up projects for client–patient satisfaction surveys. Her duties include organizing and implementing project changes to ongoing surveys, and managing and updating project documentation of standard operating procedures.

Thanks for taking the initiative to join Cable, Leighanne! We appreciate you and your commitment to our mission.

Member Profile Spotlight: Judge Melissa Blackburn

Judge Melissa Blackburn joined Cable in 2010 and serves on the Mentoring Committee.  She joined Cable because she values the opportunity to share the experiences of women in similar roles as a resource in how she approaches her own career. Likewise, she believes women have a responsibility to share their experiences with younger women entering the professional world.

We asked Melissa what she believes is the biggest challenge women face in the business world today –

“I would expand this question beyond the business world. We are seeing women take leading roles in business, nonprofit management, the arts and government. Although we have made great progress, time-worn attitudes about the strength, resolve or determination of women to be successful and help those around us to reach their potential still persist. We can overcome these challenges with consistent and diligent work.”

To a young woman starting her career, Melissa would say, “Persistence! The only ‘no’ that matters is the ‘no’ you impose upon yourself. You will be told ‘no’ in your career. You will, at times, not be taken seriously. It matters not one bit so long as you have confidence and faith in your abilities.”

Melissa Blackburn is a judge for the Davidson County General Sessions Court, Division II. In addition to regular General Sessions civil and criminal dockets, she is presiding judge of the Mental Health and Veterans Specialty Treatment Courts.

Thank you, Melissa, for all you do!
