Each year during Women’s History Month in March, Nashville joins more than 500 communities throughout the world in honoring exceptional women leaders through the ATHENA Award Program. The ATHENA Award Program was established 35 years ago in Lansing, Michigan by Martha Mayhood Mertz who stated that if a woman’s strength and contributions as a leader are publicly acknowledged, they can no longer be dismissed.
Nashville’s most prestigious and influential women’s organizations nominate the top women leaders in their organization each year for special recognition at the ATHENA Awards for serving as the embodiment of ATHENA’s spirit. These women represent the presidents of some of Nashville’s top businesses, lawyers, doctors, members of the legislature, entrepreneurs, and professors. Although their professions vary, these women all exemplify leadership and superior performance in all they do, show commitment to community and provide unselfish assistance to women and women’s issues.
The Middle Tennessee community convenes each year at the ATHENA Awards to celebrate and honor women leaders, recognize outstanding achievements, and award scholarships to deserving students. ATHENA Nashville has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships and honored over 500 deserving local women for their accomplishments. This is the 30th year of the ATHENA Awards & Scholarship Program, and it promises to be a memorable and inspiring occasion. This year’sATHENA Awards & Scholarship Program will take place on March 24, 2020.
From its inception, the Nashville ATHENA Awards Program has been and continues to be a unique community-supported program, organized and sponsored through the collaborative efforts of local women’s organizations in partnership with local businesses and individual sponsors. As the Chair and Co-Chair of this year’s ATHENA Awards & Scholarship Program, we ask that you join us in recognizing these women leaders.
