“Leadership & the US Senate – A Little Civics Lesson”


Emily J. Reynolds has had an extensive career in public service and politics since 1980.  In 2003, she was elected by the U.S. Senate to serve as the 31st Secretary of the Senate where she managed the Senate’s legislative, financial and administrative operations for the 108th and 109th Congresses.

In 2007,  Reynolds joined the Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest public power company, as senior vice president, government relations, and she completed her service at TVA in 2013.

In September 2010, Governor Phil Bredesen appointed Reynolds to the Tennessee Board of Regents, the governing body for the state’s six public universities, 13 community colleges and 27 colleges of applied technology.  She was reappointed the board of regents by Governor Bill Haslam in June 2012, and in July 2013, she was elected TBR vice-chairman.

Reynolds also serves on the boards of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and FirstBank.  She is a former regent of the Ladies Hermitage Association, now the Andrew Jackson Foundation.

A graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, MO, Reynolds holds a bachelor of arts degree.  In March 2012, she was named to the Nashville Public Education Foundation’s Public Schools Hall of Fame.  She is a native of Nashville.
