Nancy Corley Named 2018 ATHENA Leadership Award Recipient

28th Annual ATHENA Awards program celebrates Women’s History Month

The Nashville ATHENA Leadership Awards Program announces its 2018 award recipients tonight at City Winery. Nancy Corley was honored with the 2018 ATHENA Award, and Emily Passini received the Young Professional Leadership Award. Corley is among 20 ATHENA nominees selected this year by middle Tennessee organizations and associations, and Passini represents a class of 18 Young Professional Award nominees.

“Tonight is such a very special night for our nominees. Each of these women are incredibly gifted and undoubtedly represent all the characteristics of the Goddess Athena,” says ATHENA Chair Roxianne Bethune. “Corley and Passini are exemplary women who have achieved great success in their careers and gone above and beyond to serve their communities. Andrea and I congratulate each of our recipients and our 38 nominees for their dedication and inspiration. It’s been a true honor to chair this amazing program!”

Corley is an attorney and partner at Corley Henard Lyle Langford PLC. Her passion to help women have voices and choices shows through her work representing domestic violence victims as well as activism. Nominated by Women’s Political Collaborative of Tennessee, Corley supports and volunteers with Salvus Center, A Step Ahead, Children are People, PATHS, Tennessee Lawyers Association of Women, Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women, League of Women Voters and Hendersonville Women’s Club.

Nominated by the Women’s Political Collaborative of Tennessee, Emily is a partner at Greenlight Media Strategies, a woman-owned and operated political consulting firm located in Nashville, Brooklyn, and Washington D.C. With nearly two decades of experience in campaign management, coalition building and grassroots advocacy, Emily is a past Tennessee House Democratic Caucus Director, served as a Political Director of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee in Washington D.C. and worked on former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen’s administration. She is a member of the organizing committee that launched Emerge Tennessee – the 17th state affiliate of Emerge America, she is currently serving as the Board Chair. Emily also serves on the Women’s Political Collaborative of Tennessee Board of Directors.

ATHENA continues to be a premier program, powered by CABLE. The annual event is organized and sponsored through the collaborative efforts of local women’s organizations in partnership with local businesses, corporations, and individual sponsors, unlike other cities, which rely upon their local Chamber of Commerce.

Member Profile Spotlight: Robyn Bass

“Working closely together and building relationships are how you can get the most out of your membership.”
This is the advice Robyn Bass, a Cable member since 2016, would give to someone considering joining Cable. “Getting involved with a committee or taking a leadership role is the best way to network and stay active in the organization.” Robyn herself served on the Athena Awards Logistics Committee for Cable and learned that her greatest successes happen when she surrounds herself with likeminded individuals, and Cable has connected her with women who share her values and work ethic.
“Cable is such a well-respected organization, and for me, aligning myself with other professional women – both personally and professionally – has helped me maximize my growth potential.”
When asked about her biggest career setback and how she overcame it, Robyn mentioned that it was when she was helping start a company that failed before starting her current company a few years later. Robyn insists it was the lessons learned from her previous failure that fueled the success of her business. “Professional challenges force conversations that require introspection. What comes as a result of those conversations is always a better way and a better space to be in.”
This lesson motivated Robyn to launch and build a multimillion-dollar company from the ground up in just five years. Her company was recently named as a Top 25 Woman Owned Business in Nashville, and Robyn also just recently had her most career-defining moment when she was awarded the Hosts Global 2017 Leadership Award.
“I’m so proud to be a part of a company that promotes teaching and provides our team with opportunity to grow and thrive within our company and industry through education and certifications. Being proactive is everything I stand for and a direct result of our company’s success.”
Robyn Bass is a Hosts Global member and president/CEO of Maple Ridge Events. Her responsibilities include providing strategic leadership and establishing long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies.
Thank you, Robyn, for your commitment and service to Cable and the community. We appreciate you!

Member Profile Spotlight: Pat Matranga

Pat Matranga has been a Cable member for 20 years! After two decades as a member and now serving on the Cable board as Programs vice chairwoman, Pat still remembers why she made the decision to join Cable immediately after attending her first meeting. “After being surrounded by successful women who are constantly working on improving themselves, I knew instantly this was the organization for me.”
As a Cable member, Pat has had the opportunity to meet and network with both women and men she most likely would not have met otherwise. “An organization with a mission like Cable brings together people from all walks of life and provides a venue for everyone to have an enriching experience. I love being part of helping other women succeed AND celebrating their success.”
In her own career, Pat’s biggest achievement was designing and making the United Nations Foundation awards. These awards are handed to some of the most important world leaders, including President Barack Obama. She is also currently learning how to handle one of her biggest career setbacks. After returning home from the New Year, Pat discovered her workshop was “raining” due to a pipe burst. She is taking this challenge day by day and uses nutritional juicing, extra sleep, patience and determination to face this hurdle head on and grow from the experience.
When asked what advice she would give to a young professional woman today, she offered, “You don’t have to know everything. Get help or more training for the things you don’t. Just keep reaching toward things that appeal to you.”
Pat Matranga is the owner of Matranga Designs.
Thank you, Pat, for helping us spread Cable’s mission and for two decades of membership!
